The Endangered Bonda tribe

Taken almost 25 years ago by my father... These pictures are of the upper Bonda tribe living in the secluded mountains of Malkangiri, Odisha. The tribe is one of the most ancient and have kept their culture intact since more than 1000 years.

The Bonda women enjoys a special position in the society and usually shave their head while wearing colourful beads and silver rings to cover themselves. The Bonda society is usually matriarchal where women are the bread winners. The institution of marriage is also interesting in the tribe where the bride is usually 5-10 years elder to the groom. Woman enjoys great power in the society and is usually the decision maker. The Bondas are also known for their sharp weapon skills.

The tribe is said to be aggressive in nature hence many feared to enter their space. Apparently only 12000 members of this primitive tribe are living in isolation. The tribe has been declared as endangered by the Government of India.

And I remember my father going there was a feat that time and they allowing him to take their picture is another story. Found these treasures after these many years so thought of sharing it with all.
